Editing, regenerating or branching: what happens to later messages

Editing a question or regenerating an answer deletes every later question and answer for everyone and costs a new answer, while Branch in new chat keeps the original.

Edit, regenerate or branch

You spot a typo in a question you asked a while back, or you want to hear what another model would say. Lexika gives you three ways to do it, and only Branch in new chat leaves the conversation as it was.

Action Later questions and answers Costs stars
Edit message Deleted for everyone Yes, a full new answer
Regenerate Deleted for everyone Yes, a full new answer
Branch in new chat Untouched No

What Edit and Regenerate remove

Lexika deletes your question and its answer, then every later question to the AI and every later answer, and asks your question again.

  • Teammates' questions go too. Lexika deletes a question a teammate asked after yours, with its answer, for everyone. Nobody asks it again.
  • Nothing asks you to confirm, and there is no undo. The deletion starts when you send the edit or pick a model in the Regenerate list. On a computer that list opens with its first row highlighted, so pressing Enter regenerates straight away.
  • Comments stay. Lexika keeps comments, the messages sent in Chatting mode without an @mention. Your re-asked question carries the time of the edit or regeneration, so later comments now sit above it. On your own screen they vanish while the new answer is written and return when it finishes.
  • A summary may go. If your question sits above the Context compacted divider, Lexika discards that summary, because it describes answers that no longer exist.
  • The Brain keeps what it saved. Anything a removed answer saved to the Brain stays there until someone removes it.

The cost

Each edit or regeneration is a new answer, held and charged like any other message. Lexika does not return the stars spent on the removed answers. The Knowledge Base articles on what a message costs and on Owner Credit and Individual Credit explain the price and who pays.

The deletion comes first. If the new answer then cannot start, for example because the paying account is short of stars, everything stays deleted, your original question included.

Editing a question

The pencil, Edit message, sits under your own delivered questions to the AI, beside Copy to clipboard. On a computer it appears when you point at the message. The Up arrow in an empty message box, with no files waiting, opens your latest question the same way.

A strip above the box reads Edit message with the original text, and the bubble you are changing is outlined.

  • The model. The name at the top of the chat changes to the model that wrote the answer, even if Eco, Balanced or Premium picked it. To send the edit elsewhere, pick another model or a tier there, or mention a model with @.
  • The files. Your question's files replace any already waiting in the box. The new question carries whatever files the box holds when you send.
  • Leaving. Press Escape or the ✕ at the end of the strip. Text you had typed before comes back, but files you had added before do not. The model goes back to your earlier choice, unless you picked one during the edit.

Regenerating an answer

Regenerate is the circular arrow in the row under an answer. On a computer, the row appears when you point at the answer. The arrow opens a list titled Regenerate this answer with a model. The first row, Retry with same model, asks the model that wrote the answer again. Under or switch models come the models your workspace allows, without Eco, Balanced or Premium. To let Lexika pick again, edit the question and choose a tier at the top of the chat.

  • A model with a lock, a star amount or a warning sign is listed but cannot be picked.
  • If the question had files, the list offers only models that accept files.
  • Retry with same model is missing when that model is absent from the list or greyed out in it, for example because it was retired or is outside your plan.
  • Regenerate also works on an answer that failed or was stopped.

Regenerate is greyed out under the answer to a teammate's question, because only the person who asked can regenerate it. While any answer in the conversation is being written, by anyone, the pencil disappears and Regenerate is greyed out.

What the new answer works from

The new answer reads only the questions and answers above yours. It takes the settings of the moment, not the original ones:

  • the Reasoning effort set in the message box now, on models that offer it;
  • the Brain attached to the conversation now;
  • your current Chat instructions.

If you picked an app for the chat, its chip in the message box does not carry over to an edit or a regeneration. Name the app in your question if the answer needs it.

Branch in new chat leaves the original alone

Branch in new chat is the forked-arrows button at the end of the row under an answer, before the model's name. Only finished answers have it. It creates a new chat in the same folder, named after the original with "Branch of" in front (for example, Branch of Launch plan), and opens it.

The branch copies every question to the AI and every answer up to and including the one you branched from, with their authors and files, and keeps the same Brain. It leaves out comments and the original's summary. Branching costs nothing, and the original does not change. Anyone in the workspace can branch any finished answer, and everyone there can open the branch.

Picking the right one

  • Branch before you change a shared chat. If anyone asked the AI something after your question, or you want to compare models, branch from the answer to your question and edit or regenerate there.
  • A teammate's question stays theirs. In a branch, each question keeps its author, so you cannot edit or regenerate a teammate's question there either. To try it on another model, send it yourself in the branch.
  • Edit your latest question when nobody has asked the AI anything since. You lose only that question's answer.
  • Two buttons say Retry. Retry with same model, in the Regenerate list, deletes every later question and answer like any regeneration. A message of yours that failed to send gets a red circular arrow, Retry, beside it. It sends that message again and deletes nothing. If the message reads Delivery uncertain, Lexika first asks Retry this message?
